Austrian Gold Philharmonics were first produced in 1989. In 1992, 1995, and 1996 the Austrian Mint boasted that the Austrian Gold Philharmonic was the best selling gold bullion coin in the world. This is not wholly surprising given the beautiful artwork on both sides. Philharmonics were designed to honor one of the world’s great orchestras: the Vienna Philharmonic, which has been a part of the Austrian national identity since its inception in 1842. The obverse depicts the great organ in the Golden Hall in Vienna's Musikverein Concert Hall, the home of the Vienna Philharmonic. Also stamped on the obverse is the face value 2000 Schillings, year of mintage, purity (.9999 fine), and weight.
