
Designed by Christian Gobrecht in 1840, the Liberty Quarter eagle holds the distinction of keeping the same design for the longest time in American history: thirty-three years. The famous design of the Saint-Gaudens eagle is actually only a modification of the original by Gobrecht featured on this coin. The obverse features the bust of Miss Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with "Liberty", facing to the the left. She is also surrounded by thirteen stars. The reverse design features a bald eagle in flight clutching an olive branch and arrows. It has a shield emblazoned on its chest and is surrounded by "The United States Of America."
